Goals from Aiden Elliott-Wheeler and Callum Watts gave Salisbury a big win away from home against playoff-chasing Weston-super-Mare.

The first notable action of the game came in the sixth minute. A well-worked Salisbury move was fizzed low into the penalty area. Noah Coppin was the first to it but couldn’t find the back of the net against his former club.

Moments later, some more encouraging Whites’ build-up play led to Aiden Elliott-Wheeler gaining possession in the host’s penalty area. The wide-man tricked his way past his defender and fired past Max Harris to open the scoring.

The Seagulls responded brightly almost getting one back, however Rhys Byrne in the Salisbury net was able to secure the ball on the goal line preventing Coulson from firing home.

Elliott-Wheeler continued to cause problems for the hosts throughout the first half. The loanee was relentless in running at the Weston-super-Mare backline, causing chaos amongst them.

Five minutes before the interval, Coulson found space to cut in on his favoured right foot and swung in a dangerous-looking cross. The cross beat everyone and smashed the outside of the post.

Two minutes later, Elliott-Wheeler got in behind. He struck it early and dragged it wide.

The youngster then worked himself another opportunity immediately after, his quick footwork was too much for a couple Weston defenders and left them out to dry, however the finish wasn’t quite as grand, Harris came out on top this occasion.

The Whites went into halftime the happier of the two sides after producing one of their finer first-half displays this season.

After a quiet start to the second period, Tom Leggett produced the first meaningful action of the half. The makeshift centre-back could only fire over after Callum Watts had the awareness to pick him out.

Five minutes later, Leggett came even closer to doubling Salisbury’s lead. Jordan Ragguette beat Weston skipper Lewis and laid it off to Leggett; the attempt was whiskers away from creeping into the bottom corner of Harris’ goal.

In the 71st minute, substitute Lewis Brown found himself one on one with Harris, the young Cherries loanee could only drag his effort wide of the post.

Ruben Reid’s underwhelming headed effort was the first-half chance of the second period for the hosts, which came with ten minutes left of normal time.

Two minutes later, Sam Pearson slid in at the back post to equalise for the Somerset outlet after Borges crossed a good ball in. It would be a fair judgement to say this was against the run of play.

Just as the momentum had started to swing in the host’s favour, Salisbury found some real quality. A direct ball forward found the heel of Brown’s boot, and the player flicked the ball cutely into the path of the alert Callum Watts, who, after what felt like an eternity, slotted calmly home to restore a precious White’s lead.

The fourth official signalled six additional minutes.

Ruben Reid produced a heart-in-mouth moment for the travelling support during the early stages of stoppage time after he struck the crossbar from range.

It was more panic for Salisbury, this time deep into added time. Coulson’s freekick forced a fine full-stretch save out of Byrne to secure three massive points for the Wiltshire side.
